The Path to Becoming a Chess World Master

In the world of chess, there is no greater honor than becoming a World Champion. Bobby Fischer became the one and only American World Champion in 1972. While many players had boasted of the title since the game began, the title became an official designation in 1886 when Wilhelm Steinitz and Johannes Zukertort sat down to play a match which they, as well as other parties involved, agreed would determine the World Champion of chess. Since that auspicious match, which Steinitz won, there have been 19 other World Chess Champions. While the title remains the crown of the chess world, the path to it is complicated, arduous and forever changing.
